Furmint February Festival – Wine Tasting in Vajdahunyad Castle

The Furmint February, aka the Great Furmint Wine Tasting Festival takes place every year in the Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest City Park. This is a great event to take part in a Budapest wine tour off the beaten path, and to try some of the best iconic wines of Hungary, the white dry Furmint varieties.

The date of the 2013 Furmint February Festival (Furmint Februar in Hungarian) is set on February 7, 2013.

2014 Furmint February: the dates for 2014 have not been finalized yet, but most probably will be some time in February.

Hungarian Furmint wines are dry white wines that go excellently with cheeses and poultry meals. Furmint is a great alternative if you have had enough of Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc, and wish to explore something new and exotic.

The tasting tickets are HUF 6,900 which include the wine tastings. Make sure to book you tickets in advance as tickets quickly sell out before the event.

Furmint February Hungary will showcase the wines of about 50 premium wineries in Hungary (see the list below). Booking your ticket in advance at info@vinoport.hu.

There are not many wine festivals in winter in Budapest, so the Furmint February (Furmint Februar in Hungarian) stands out amongst the Budapest Wine Festivals, such as the Buda Castle Wine Festival.

Although the video is in Hungarian, it serves as a good teaser for this excellent wine event in Vajdahunyad Castle Budapest. Take a look at the interior of the castle, some of the wine producers, and people mingling with wonderful glasses of wines and home made excellent cheeses.

Furmint Wines from Hungary

Furmint Wines are probably the iconic Hungarian white wines. Furmint grapes are most commonly grown in north-eastern Hungary, in the Tokaj wine region. Unlike Tokaj aszu wines, which are very sweet, Furmint wines can gently bite due to their increased levels of acidity. That said, Furmint is one of the three varieties that make the world famous Tokaji aszu, the sweet botrytised dessert wines adored for many centuries, most notably by the Sun King of France.

The name of the wine variety, ‘Furmint’ comes from a Hungarian word for the color of Furmint wines, which are ‘froment’, or wheaten. While Hungary is still most well known for the sweet Tokaji Aszu dessert wines, the Furmint grapes are quite unlike the super sweet aszu wines. Furmint wine is a dry white wine with well-defined aromatics and lots of crisp bite (you can taste the traces of rich honey, light stone fruits, mineral tinges).
