Winter in Vajdahunyad Castle

Winter does not steal the beauty of Vajdahunyad Castle, quite on the contrary, the towers and turrets, the moat and the chapel, the courts surrounded by medieval and baroque wings all convey a special atmosphere, which makes Vajdahunyad Castle one of the most visited attractions in the City Park in Budapest.

When the cold weather sets in, it is usually November (do visit the St Martin’s Weekend and the New Wine & Cheese Festival in the Castle). Both events offer traditional Hungarian tasting opportunities, and some insights into Hungarian cultural traditions, well nurtured in the countryside.

Budapest Christmas Market

Budapest Christmas Market

In December, there used to be some Advent Fairs in Vajdahunyad Castle, but these days the Christmas stalls and craft makers have moved to the two bigger Christmas markets in Budapest to showcase their products, the Budapest Christmas Market on Vorosmarty Square, and the Budapest Advent Fair at the St Stephen’s Basilica.
Although there are usually no New Year events in Vajdahunyad Castle, there are many New Year Budapest Events, from New Year’s Eve Parties to New Year Concerts in Budapest, Hungary.

All three months the Castle is open, welcoming visitors who wish to see the permanent and temporary exhibitions inside Vajdahunyad Castle, featuring thematic collections of the Hungarian Agricultural Museum.
Temporary exhibitions have a wide range of themes, not necessarily related to agriculture or farm life in Hungary, for instance, it could be about Hungarian Noblemen’s Treasures.

Tickets to the concerts are very reasonably priced (approx. HUF 4,000 / €18). The prices are flat prices, no seats are numbered.

The Summer Music Festival concerts usually start at about 8:30 pm, and most events are scheduled for the weekends.

Sunday Services at 12 pm in the Jaki Chapel in Vajdahunyad Castle, Budapest. The Jak Chapel (Jaki Kapolna) is the Romanesque style building of the Vajdahunyad Var, a 19th century castle merging the various architectural styles and buildings in Austria-Hungary of 1896.

Every Sunday from spring to autumn there are Sunday services from noon in the nice chapel. In addition, during the Advent period, you can attend the Advent services too (and visit the Christmas Market in Vajdahunyad Castle).

There are frequent choir and orchestra concerts in the Jaki Chapel of Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest, here are some videos of a concert, which also show the interior of the chapel.

Schütz: Die sieben Worte Jesu Christi am Kreuz

J. Rheinberger: A-Major Mass

Pergolesi: Stabat mater

The chapel of Jak (Jaki Kapolna) is often showing weddings, as it is a popular and romantic wedding venue in Budapest, Hungary.

The chapel’s gate is a replica of Jak Church near Szombathely, Hungary, while its design is a copy of the Romanesque style Lebeny Church.

Jak Chapel is one of the hidden gems to see in a romantic Budapest visit.
